The 4th annual Pre-Rade was attended by Parents, Students, and Alumni. Freshman wore tee-shirts with colors coordinated to match their respective residential colleges (e.g. baby blue for Butler). Several alum were there--but we did not all stand together so it was difficult to see how many of us actually made it. There was the occasional sighting of orange and black reunions jackets. Afterwards the gathering at Maclean House included alumni and parents of the entering students. Some parents were looking pretty dog-faced because their students had just made the ultimate separation and many had pushed them out of their dorm rooms. A few new faulty members stood in the crowd as well. Next year, our Post Pre-rade gathering could extend an invitation to parents of freshman and new faculty. We could call it the decompression hour.

PA3 Goes to Isles

Our first PA3 Community Service event - a volunteer day on September 20 at Isles - was a great success. Almost 50 people - mostly alums, but also students, families and friends - spent the day tearing down walls and disassembling interior structures in a beautiful, century-plus-old former textile mill. The 6.5 acre site is being converted by Isles into a mixed use, "green" village, to include offices for public interest and environmental organizations, training facilities for inner city youth, homes, art studios and other spaces. We learned something and had a lot of fun, and we're tentatively planning a similar event in late October to finish the demolition in the area where we were working.

Pre-rade a success!

A crowd of several hundred, including alumni from the area dressed in their Reunions costumes, as well as the University Band, parents and members of the Classes of '09, '10 and '11 gathered on the lawn in front of Nassau Hall on Sunday, 7 September, to welcome the freshman class of 2012.

This was the fourth annual "Pre-Rade" which was led by President Shirley Tilghman and a retinue of around 100 faculty members and administrators, dressed in their academic regalia, entering through Fitzrandolph gate, leading eventually to a class of '12 barbeque and then the "Step Sing" on Blair Steps, where the class was introduced to five Princeton songs including, of course, Old Nassau.

Thanks to the alumni, many from the Princeton Area Alumni Association, for helping make this event a success.

Some photos can be found here.

Sustainability Open House Sept 17th

Dear Local Princeton Alumni and Alumnae:

You are cordially invited to attend Sustainability: Introducing Princeton’s Green Initiatives on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 from 3 pm to 8 pm at Frist Campus Center. The open house will introduce Princeton’s Sustainability Plan and is an opportunity for all members of the Princeton community to learn about the University’s goals to reduce our environmental footprint over the next ten years and beyond. Participants will include campus experts from departments such as engineering, transportation and parking, design and construction, dining services, recycling, and many other areas that oversee sustainable initiatives at Princeton. Students and faculty involved in sustainability related projects and research will talk about their programs as well. The faculty, staff, and student participants will use displays and interactive exhibits to discuss their work and solicit visitors’ questions and ideas. Most importantly, attendees will find out how we can collaborate to support our ambitious sustainability goals.

This event is free and open to the public and is coordinated by the Office of Sustainability. Please see the invitation at www.princeton.edu/sustainability/announcements/sustainability-openhouse/ for more information.

I look forward to seeing you on the 17th.
