Progress at Isles!

At the fourth PA3 volunteer day at Isles on April 18, a crew of about 25 area alums, family members and friends broke into groups to finish deconstructing a room, scrape and paint walls, disassemble pallets, and sort debris for recycling. Isles founder and president Marty Johnson '81 also gave everyone a tour of the amazing facility. Enthusiasm continues unabated, and more PA3 volunteer opportunities at Isles are planned.

Isles Volunteer Day - April 18 - Update

Oops, forgot to post this earlier. Here are the details for this Saturday's volunteer day:

Saturday, April 18, 2009
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Please join us for the fourth in a series of volunteer days being co-organized by the Community Service Committee of the Princeton Area Alumni Association (PA3) and Isles, Inc., a Trenton-based development organization (www.isles.org) started in 1981 by Marty Johnson '81.

Volunteers will continue working on the renovation of a former textile mill on the Trenton-Hamilton border. The 6.5 acre site is being converted by Isles into a mixed use, "green" village. It will include offices for public interest and environmental organizations, training facilities for inner-city youth, homes, art studios, and other spaces.

Alumni, spouses/partners/friends, and children (10 and up) are welcome to participate. There's something for everyone, from the brawny to the scrawny. We look forward to seeing our "regulars" and hope to see lots of first-time volunteers too. No experience needed.

Here's what we'll be doing on April 18:
-Continue deconstruction on the second and third floors
-Prepare interior bricks, including scraping and painting

The mill is located at One North Johnston Avenue, Hamilton, NJ 08609, about a 12-minute drive from the Princeton campus, just south on Route 1.

25 people have volunteered so far for this Saturday, and there's plenty of room for more. This is a BIG building.

PLEASE EMAIL ARLEN HASTINGS '80 (hastings@ias.edu) IF YOU'RE PLANNING TO ATTEND, as we need a head count to ensure we have the right number of supervisors and supplies.

Directions, waiver forms, information on lunch plans, and other details will be provided to volunteers closer to the work date.

We hope to see you at Isles on April 18!

SIMEONE CAR MUSEUM TRIP - MAY 23rd

What: The PA5 is planning a trip to the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum. The Simeone Foundation is reportedly the 2nd largest private collection of cars in the US, second only to Jay Leno's. It is one of the few places where you can not only see rare and beautiful sports racing cars, you can hear them run as well! And, not only is each car in the collection rare, but also has an interesting racing and/or ownership history. It is a must see for anyone remotely interested in cars.

The PA5 event is planned for May 23rd, a Demo Day at the Simeone Foundation. The Demo Day will start with Dr. Simeone and Museum Curator Kevin Kelly talking about the history and mechanics of each featured car. They’ll open up the hoods and let you see the engines. Then, they’ll drive the cars on their 3-acre lot in back of the Museum. The featured cars for the May 23rd Demo Day will be the $4+ million prize of the collection, the Cobra Daytona Coupe (the first one ever built and one of the few in existence), and the Ford GT40 MKII (one of the last ever built).

Who: All Princetonians, their friends and families (basically everyone!)
Date: May 23, 2009
Time: 10:30 AM at the Museum (9:00 AM for caravan from Princeton - see below)
Location: Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum, near the Philadelphia Airport (see website for directions: www.simeonefoundation.org)
Cost: Pay at the door - Normal museum rates: Adults $12, Seniors $10, kids under 8 are free (if we have 10 or more people, than we get an extra $2 discount per person)
Transportation: On your own or a caravan from the Princeton area is being planned (bring your own fun car or ride in someone else's); parking at the museum is free and plentiful.
Please RSVP: princetonareaalumni@gmail.com

COLLEGE MENTORING: Volunteers Needed

***Monday, March 23, 1:30-3:00 p.m.***
COLLEGE MENTORING in partnership with ReachOut 56-81 (www.reachout56-81.com/).
Isles Youthbuild Insitute, 354 South Broad Street, Trenton [note: this is NOT the Isles Johnston Ave site]

From Lon Johnson '08, Executive Coordinator, ReachOut 56-81: "Session will be about local 2 and 4 year universities and colleges that might be options for the Youthbuild students upon their graduation next year. We'll touch on the SATs, essays, financial aid, and whatever else they might be curious about in terms of the college admissions process. In Early April, we're planning on going back in to the school to hold a similar type of session on military service and vocational training. Volunteers at the March 23rd session will be expected to know what a college might be looking for in an applicant, and how a student goes about paying for college. Later on this spring, we'll return to provide one on one counseling to interested students."

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER ON MARCH 23, please contact Lon Johnson at lon@reachout56-81.com or 609-462-5545.

Lon continues: "Our 'Learning for Life' program at Youthbuild, of which the session on the 23rd is a part, is designed to expose the Youthbuild students to different career paths and opportunities that they can expect to pursue when they graduate. Because of this, we're really looking for a wide variety of career paths among our volunteers. That being said, on the 23rd we're expecting to meet with 15-20 students (those at Youthbuild who are interested in further academics), and we already have 4 or 5 class of 56 supporters and could use another 3-4 volunteers."

Please note: For alums who are interested in college mentoring but are not available to volunteer on weekdays when ReachOut's activities take place, PA3 is also developing a college mentoring program that will engage volunteers on weekends and/or evenings.
